In Defense of Kim Kardashian

Listen, I can’t claim to be a fan of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. I have watched their show, I find them entertaining. But, I’m not buying lip plumper from Kylie or shape wear from Kim.

But, if you ask me if I like the Kardashians, I’m not going to lie. Yes! I think that they are a tribe of genius business women who know how to leverage their celebrity and who have all built an empire – what’s not to like?

When Kim Kardashian first started her legal studies journey, women in the legal community had A LOT to say about it. Ninety percent of the comments that I saw in my lady lawyer groups were catty, negative, and down right mean spirited.

Lots of people asked me what I thought about Kim starting her legal studies. My answer was simple: Good for her! Everyone is entitled to a weird hobby.

Love her or hate her, Kim Kardashian is one of the hardest working women in the entertainment business. She has a reality TV show and a business empire more complex than most of us will ever know. And, on top of it all, she is a mother to 4 children. Sure, she probably has help raising her kids. But the fact remains the same: Kim Kardashian in one busy woman.

If she wants to use the little free time that she has to study the law to positively impact her community: GOOD FOR HER.

I recently read that Kim failed the California “baby bar” (aka First-Year Law Students’ Examination) that is required for people studying the law non-traditionally like Kim. I’ve read a number of reactions to her results, and frankly, it didn’t sit well with me.

My fellow lady esquires, we are better than this. We should be cheering Kim on and rooting for her success. She has a platform. If she succeeds, just imagine the good work that she could do. Kim’s success is not our failure.

I guess that I sympathize with Kim because I too went to law school non-traditionally. I worked full time and went to school at night. It took me 4 years. I remember the grind. Law school was my weird hobby! Kim has it so much harder. She doesn’t have the benefit of a formal classroom education. She is a full time working mother running an empire.

Cut Kim some slack.

Kim, this lady esquire believes in you. Don’t give up on your dream. You can do it!
